Pedagogical Foundation
Astehmari Batekun, Principal of the Black Open University, stands as the Principal Teacher of Unifiedknowledge | የጥምር ዕውቀት: a pedagogical framework restoring African Indigenous relational-embodied ways of knowing through STEM + the Arts, Maat-centred ethics, and disciplined mind-breath-body practice. His work formalises education as coherence-building, where knowledge is not merely received but cultivated through embodied insight, cultural memory, scientific reasoning, and communal responsibility.
Rooted in KaZimba Ngoma and the Schools Of Unified Learning tradition, Astehmari’s teaching journey includes graduation into KaZimba Ngoma practice in 1996, founding SOUL in 2001, and teaching at Addis Ababa University by 2003 through a faculty development partnership. His pedagogical path also includes induction into Geez language for classical keyword instruction at Mount Zuqualla Abo Monastery, deepening the linguistic, culture panAfrica and epistemic foundations of his work.
As Principal Teacher, he guides Unifiedknowledge as a living educational technology: one that brings physics, mathematics, dance, story, ethics, and African civilisational memory into one coherent learning field. Through practices such as Dankira Tehwagi and the Mantis Memory Matrix, his work invites learners to become prepared observers, sovereign thinkers, and embodied stewards of knowledge.
Project Leadership - Golden House Schools Network & Field Development Project
As Project Lead for AlkebulanMeta, Astehmari directs the early stage formation of Golden House Schools Network and the wider Golden House Field Development Project - a person-centred initiative for school leaders, teachers, learners, cooperatives, and education professionals in the Mount Elgon region of Uganda and beyond.
The project operates on two connected tracks:
- Track 1 (School STEM Projects): Teacher CPD in Unifiedknowledge, student deep-STEM courses (bee ecology, data science, Web6Functions), after-school study groups, digital ecosystem access (i-Learn, i-Chat, i-Plan, CKBank, BkApp), facilitator stipends, offline-aware delivery, and a living story - Amenta and the Royal Bees.
- Track 2 (The Golden House Processing Plant): A larger, longer-term enterprise anchored in the trust and operational resilience demonstrated by Track 1, designed to create livelihoods, sustainable value chains, and cooperative-owned economic anchor for the region.
Astehmari leads the current consultation and school readiness phase, in partnership with Sebei Coffee and Honey Farmers Cooperative Society Limited (Connel Kibet, Chair). The immediate focus is on four districts - Kween, Kapchorwa, Bukwo, and Teso - with future expansion planned across Karamoja, Sebei, and Teso.
Through four structured surveys (School Readiness, Teacher Capacity, Student Learning, and Connectivity/Safeguarding), headteachers and school leadership teams are helping shape a realistic, locally meaningful pilot. The information gathered directly supports the i‑Staker fundraising case and ensures that any funded pilot is grounded in real conditions, priorities, and safeguarding requirements.
Astehmari’s role is not simply to manage a project. It is to cultivate a living field - trained teachers, engaged students, a digital ecosystem, a living story, and self-sustaining livelihoods - so that the Golden House vision can be built on proven demand, community trust, and operational resilience.
His work brings together African Indigenous epistemology, rigorous STEM education, cooperative enterprise, and Web3-enabled value recognition (CK Value, Behr/Zehr, KICAS Points, STACs) - all while maintaining offline-aware delivery for rural schools with limited connectivity.
